Allahabad Agricultural Institute was established in 1910 as a department of Allahabad Christian College. In 1911, the Agriculture and Technical Department of the College were shifted across the Jamuna River from Allahabad. In April 1913, the Agriculture and Technical Department were bifurcated from the Arts and Science Department of the Christian College.
On February 1st April 1913, the school was rechristened as the Allahabad Agricultural Institute providing a wider scope of expansion, development and board based educational management.
In order to obtain more academic freedom and to strengthen the specialized programme of teaching research and extension, a proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Govt. of India on 31st August, 1994 for granting the Deemed University status to the institute. Later on 15th and 16th May 1997 a team of experts appointed by the University Grants Commission visited the institute. It was encouraging to learn about the report submitted by the visiting team to the commission that the institute has all infrastructural and academic means for granting he deemed university status.
It was on July 19th 1997 that the meeting of the full commission was held at UGC, and it recommended finally to the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, for issuance of notification for the Deemed University status to Allahabad Agricultural Institute. |
